What is it?

Wikipedia

(GNU Image Manipulation Program) is a free and open-source raster graphics editor used for image retouching and editing, free-form drawing, converting between different image formats, and more specialized tasks.

Gimp - what I use it for

  • Enhance quality of and/or modify plots taken from papers for talks
  • Create schematics (i.e. free drawing)
  • scale/retouch images and photos

Get it, docs, manuals

  • linux distributions like Ubuntu ship it as a package (get it via apt-get)
  • check out the gimp website for documentation
